Web Hosting w/ Renewable Energy

Are you thinking of using Unglitch.io to host your website, but can’t decide? Well, I have something exciting that just might having us win you over!

Now it’s probably not obvious with such a techy name like Unglitch.io that the founder, Jacquelyn would care that much about the planet. Years ago when I started to host clients’ websites are started to discover that what I was doing wasn’t all that great for the planet…

I’m pretty sure most of us don’t know much about the impact website hosting can really have. In fact, I don’t think many of us understand how the internet really works to be real with you. The basics are these: a website is basically a load of files. HTML, images, posts, all that stuff. All of these files need to be stored in a folder on a computer that is connected to the internet, that computer is called a “server” because it serves up the website files when people come to visit, like a little internet waiter.

To keep your website online, those computers stay online 24/7. The data centers for our websites are built specially to keep their servers online at all times, however the powering of data centers and cloud computing runs on fossil fuels, and is coming close to rivaling the aviation industry as a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Yikes!

In 2020 there were roughly 3 billion users online, In 2021 we’ve easily climbed to 8 billion users and counting. You can see where this is going for the environment.

When I learned this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Here I am trying to talk about ethical and sustainable living in my personal life. I’m certainly not perfect. I could “go zero” more of course. Yet a part of my business was contributing to huge global pollution levels. Was I causing more harm than good by hosting websites?

I had to do something…

That’s why as of January 2021 I am proud of saying Unglitch.io web hosting services are “300% powered by renewable energy. If you’re scratching your head at the math involved, it simply means that Unglitch.io actually returns three times the wind power credits that we and our clients use — about 600,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

Beyond a net positive carbon footprint, Unglitch.io is no slouch as a web host. We’re small compared to some other hosting companies, with 160+ web hosting customers and growing, but we make up for it with feature-rich plans and excellent customer support.

Not to mention I don’t believe in charging for things that take a few clicks on our end like SSL Certificates, backups, etc. I’ve never understood why other big-box hosts charge so much money for these small tasks and required features.

With Unglitch.io, your website will help create renewable energy instead of soaking it up. So if sustainability is one of your priorities along with good value and great support, come on over – we’d be happy to house your website. If you choose Unglitch.io, and if protecting the environment also resonates with your brand’s target market, don’t forget to let them know that your website is powered by 100% carbon-neutral hosting. This might encourage more people to take that same step and help save our beautiful blue and green home!
